Day 35: Stabilizer Skin (40m)

Today I had planned to get the skin drilled and assembled to the spars but it wasn’t to be. Skins seem to be a bit of an Achilles Heel with me. Anyway, I got the skin out and clecoed it to the spars.

With everything as flat and level as I could get it, I then drilled all the holes out to size 30.

With the skin attached it was time to drill through the l-angle into the tip ribs (this picture was taken before this step but shows where the holes were going to be drilled).

I then turned the whole thing over in preparation of folding over the other half of the skin

The DVD and photo guide say to use several ratchet straps to bring the skin over and tight to the skeleton. Not being used to ratchet straps I spent a lot of time messing with them, trying to get them into a position from which they would pull the skin tight without the reel getting full. The skin being opened as in the picture made it hard to do this and I eventually gave up in disgust and will come back to it at the weekend. I think I shall use something to push the skin most of the way over so that it is less tall, and then attach the straps so that they don’t have to be tightened very much.
