On the basis of the more the merrier, we also had her cousin Paul come over and, with him, Uncle Bob. So quite the full house in the hangar and it would have been wasteful not to have done a major item. And so I decided we would get some firewall installation done.

But first I had decided we needed to trim a little bit more off the cabin frame tubes at the top and Allen was gracious enough to get the metal grinder out and take a bit off. After that, it was a much better fit and Paul and I drilled the holes from the top doubler into the cabin frame.

Oh, and fearing a letter from CalOSHA I bought some ladders – no more standing on plastic chairs! (These ladders will also be an essential prop in attaching the wings).

After this we got the firewall and marked a centre line on both it and the fuselage and aligned them to get a perfect match and then drilled through the bottom holes and clecoed the two parts together.

On inspection it could do with coming forward a couple of mms. Since it has only been pilot drilled I think I can take care of that when I enlarge the holes, and move the whole thing a tiny bit forward. We’ll see.

We drilled through the cabin sides into the forward longerons.

The upper engine mounts have to be trimmed on one corner to fit inside the flange of the firewall and Allen was again the grinder master in getting them to fit. Once they fit, they were clamped in position and the location of the firewall marked on the bottom. The location of a second hole was then determined and drilled.

Both mounts were clamped back in place and the holes were drilled through into the longerons, and from the firewall into the mounts. After doing the left hand mount we discovered a big gap between the mount and the longeron. We made the mistake of drilling the back hole and then doing the hole from the firewall. It must not have been clamped very well as the second drilling raised it up. I will have to purchase a new mount. For the right side we drilled both longeron holes first and it came out great.

It was way into lunch time, temperatures were getting up so I called it quits for the day but before leaving we had to take care of the main task of the day – unjoining the fuselage parts. Since we weren’t sure what would happen when we took out the clecos, we all stood by ready to catch whatever fell off.

And here we are back to not looking like a plane again.

Next up will be to deburr the forward cabin and rivet much of it together. Before the parts can be rejoined I need to install the flaperon controls and the ELT since they will be obstructed by baggage panels after riveting.

There is a problem with the seat base not fitting when the two fuselage parts are together. It appears quite a bit too wide to fit inside the area when they join. But when apart the seat base is a perfect fit for the forward fuselage. I think I will send this one to Zenith, see if they can suggest where I have gone wrong. Hopefully nothing too drastic.

Today I wanted to separate the two fuselage halves and we asked my wife’s Uncle Allen if he could return to help.
