The reason – clearances for accessing the backs of the bolts for the gear strut fittings are very small, especially for this adult male. Or maybe I just have “man hands”?

Anyway, here’s a picture of my hand in behind the side channel that protects half the bolts from being easy to get to.

It’s too bad I riveted the baggage floors, although I could say that about a lot of things, whole plane would be unriveted if I applied that argument. Anyway, a few scratches, scrapes but no major bleeding and I had the first strut fitting done

The remaining hole is for an A5 rivet which I decided to leave until the last minute. Standard practice says to pull that from the inside (where the metal is thinnest) but if I need to get that rivet out it will be no fun at all!

Here’s a view from underneath

and inside looking at the doubler

.

Given it is only a dozen bolts, seems like it took ages but getting the nuts on in tight spaces was trickier than I expected. I did learn some lessons though that helped speed up the pilot side.

There is a small problem (noted by everyone else on the forums), there is a rivet hole underneath one of the bolts but there is absolutely no space for both. Perhaps if you could get a rivet gun to rivet from the inside it would work but the space is too tight.

This view is looking down into the cabin, you can maybe make out the hole underneath the bolt to the right of my finger. I shall see if I can make an alternative hole nearby and in the meantime I shall fill that with whatever one does with rivet holes they aren’t using.

Finally, for the day, I removed the heel guard from the inside cabin and primed all the surfaces for riveting the forward side skins. I then reattached them for riveting next trip to the hangar.

And, while I was filling the air with toxins, I sprayed my engine mounts with the metal primer that I am using for the steel parts.

Back to work tomorrow. As usual I did not get done as much as I expected, in part this time because I took three days off with a cold. I really had hoped to see the plane on her wheels by this day but that was obviously not going to happen after the first day of the break, but without this cold I probably could have had one of them done, or close to done.

So, next time will be riveting the inside cabin, painting the firewall with some heat resistant paint (to be researched and purchased), starting on the nose gear (or landing gear if firewall is too wet to work with).

Its not often I find myself wishing a small child was around but today was one of those times.
