I had wanted to get back to the tail this weekend but the replacement gussets from Zenith had not arrived so I switched my attention to the seats. Although the seats won’t go in until quite near the end it is important to get them done so we can work out where to put them which, in turn, lets me decide where the control stick goes for the best comfort. <\/p>\n

First in the instructions is to install the lower seat belt attachment bracket

The guide is very precise about where this goes but I almost got it wrong. It states something like “30mm from the top of the longeron” but I measured 30mm from the top of that extrusion it sits on. It just didn’t look right to me so I looked at the plans and saw it clearly marking the 30mm from the top. Glad I saw that before I started drilling.<\/p>\n

I’m not going to rivet it until I see if it interferes with getting the seat pan in and out.<\/p>\n

The seat consists of a seat base and a seat back joined with the attachment brackets show here “ready” to drill.

Once they were all drilled I clecoed it all together and put the seats in the plane for a picture. You can see that I didn’t put the seat pans in, they are just rested on the sides.

Somehow it looks more plane-like with seats in. <\/p>\n

After some priming and deburring, I riveted the brackets to the seat bases, being sure to use the special steel rivets not the regular ones (that would shear off when my fat bottom sat down).

The final installation says to put a washer over the seat back pin, drill a hole and insert the cotter pin. One of my bracket placements wasn’t quite high enough up because the washer would not fit so I had to file some of it away.

I then drilled the cotter pin holes and went looking for the cotter pins. I couldn’t find any of the right size in what I had been sent. I don’t know if I had used the wrong size elsewhere or they hadn’t been shipped. Either way, I have to buy some more.

Cotter pins aside, this completes the seats other than the tricky part of getting them upholstered. Zenith sells a nice looking kit<\/a> but at $800 I am sure I could do just as well for less. The problem is how?! Living so close to the border many have people have said take it to Mexico but I’m not sure how I would get that done.
