Higher Speed Taxi Testing and Some New Issues

Got up early this morning to get some high speed taxiing done, including wearing in the brakes. Here’s a little video from my start up, unfortunately I still don’t have the interior camera mounted because I need an adaptor to get it where I want it.

I taxied to the runway and down the parallel taxiway at speeds between 25 and 35 mph, braking every now and again to get down to 5 or 10 (per the Matco instructions). I’ve no idea if it had any effect.

I did do a mag check in the runup area and found I could barely hold the plane on the brakes at 4000 rpm, so that is something that needs attention, hopefully some of the brake wearing will help with that. The mag check was fine.

At more than 20/25 mph the plane was quite hard to keep straight, kept wanting to veer off to the side until I reduced the power. I’m not sure if this just something to get used to, the plane being real light and all, or if there is a misalignment between the front wheel and the rudder. Something else to check.

I did an engine start yesterday and after a short while the fuel gauges started acting crazy, showing up random numbers between 0 and 3 (there were three gallons in each tank). The same thing happened again today as soon as the engine started, and continued throwing random numbers at me throughout the taxiing. I’m guessing this is a loose connection – hopefully it is at the RDAC unit on the engine, if not I’m going to have to go back into the wing to look. There is an access panel under the wing but I’m not sure how much access I will get from there.

I now have 0.23 hours on the Hobbs.
