Day 17: Attach Top Skin to Left Inboard Slat (50m)

With a bit more confidence we tackled folding over the skin onto the left inboard slat ribs. With this slat the two end ribs lined up almost exactly with the pre-drilled holes but the middle rib was quite tricky to locate where the holes were. A couple of times I thought we were close but shining a torch down the slat would reveal that the cleco had not fastened to the rib beneath. A forum poster had mentioned using an ice pick to help find the hole and I hit upon the idea of using the punch I had bought to knock out the rivets in the rudder and this turned out to be a very good idea. Once a hole was found the punch moved it close enough to then get the cleco into both sets of holes.

After not too much struggle we had all holes cleco’d enabling me to then drill out all the holes to size 30 for the A4 rivet. That was enough for the day, deburring and riveting to come.
