Day 50: Upper and Lower Horns (1 hr 45m)

It has been a while since I was last in the garage, two weeks in Europe and a bunch of family engagements at the weekends have slowed me down. And summer is here and it’s hot, can’t stay in the garage for long now unless we can get some cooling system in there.

With the skins done, the next item is to install the upper and lower horns onto the spar and rear channel. They came pre-drilled so all I had to do was locate where they go and to make sure they were put on the right way around.

A horn angle attaches to both horns and to the spar. The DVD talks about cutting the corners off the piece but I was glad to see that this piece is now sent pre-shaped. The horn angle requires 4 rivets into the rear channel and I had to locate where to put them, as you can see from the picture I marked it wrong first time.

Once attached to the spar, there are also two holes that go into the horns and then all the horn angle holes get opened for an A5 rivet.

The horns are also strengthened to the rear channel by a piece of l-angle. It gets marked for three rivet holes into the rear channel and a single hole into each horn.

The ends of the l-angle stick out above the horns so I trimmed the corners so that it looked better (and wouldn’t stab me!).

And that is it for the upper and lower horn assembly. Next up is the trim tab and then the tail is “done” (bar deburing and riveting)
