Day 65: Wings! (30m)

No, I did not complete the wings in 30 minutes, but I have drawn first blood, as it were, on the wings kit (though now I think about it I did cut myself in the process).

I had taken the day off work to get a good session in on the wings before we left for the Copper State fly-in in Casa Grande, AZ, but things had gone bad at work the day before and I spent much of the day trying to troubleshoot from home, hence the lousy 30 minutes.

The first task in the wings construction is to bend some L-angles to fit on the slat-bearing nose ribs. Here are all the nose ribs:

The edge of the nose ribs are pretty thin so we bend a small l-angle around it to give the wing skin something to sit on. Between the l-angle and the rib we shall insert one of these slat supports:

I plan on making all 8 nose ribs at the same time (rather than just for the pilot side wing) so I started by cutting a piece of l-angle into 8 120mm strips. Each strip was then divided into sections given by the plans. I then drill a hole in the bend of the strip where each division occurs, then using the snips to cut down to the hole, enabling the strip to bend.

The trick then is to bend the angle into the exact curve of the rib whilst lining up the tabs in the strip with the pre-drilled holes. This is pretty darned tricky but the DVD comes to the rescue by suggesting that you clamp some scrap metal around the rib and then you can snug the strip up to it.

And that was as far as I got before Teri came home and we were ready to go off to the fly-in. Now that I have my sharp knife I shall return to trimming the tail nose skins and riveting them to the frame, then it is all systems go on the wings.
